6 Affirmation Mistakes That Can Hold You Back

Affirmations are a powerful tool for shaping your mindset and influencing your reality, but they only work effectively when created with intention and care. Many people unintentionally sabotage their affirmations by making avoidable mistakes. Let’s explore the common pitfalls and how to overcome them, so your affirmations can have the greatest impact.

👋 New to affirmations? My Affirmations 101 guide is the best place to start.

If you're new to affirmations or need a refresher on the basics, my Affirmations 101 article provides a deep dive into how affirmations work, why they’re effective, and how to choose the right ones for you. It’s the perfect complement to this guide!

1. Getting Attached to the Who, How and When

The Mistake:

Focusing your affirmation on how, when, or who will make your desire happen—such as tying it to a specific person’s actions or a rigid timeline.

Why It Doesn’t Work:

When you get too specific about the who, how, or when, you limit the possibilities for your desire to unfold in the best way. By fixating on a single path, you may overlook an even better opportunity.

  • The Problem With Getting Attached to Who: The person you expect to take action may not be the right one. Staying open allows the right support or connection to come from unexpected places.
  • The Problem With Getting Attached to When: Your ideal timeline may not be the most effective or sustainable. Releasing strict deadlines allows things to fall into place at the right pace.
  • The Problem With Getting Attached to How: There are many possible ways for your outcome to manifest. Insisting on just one approach can prevent easier or more fulfilling paths from emerging.

Letting go of these specifics creates space for your outcome to happen in ways beyond what you originally imagined.

The Fix:

Phrase your affirmations to focus on the desired outcome, not the steps.

  • Incorrect: “My boss will give me a raise this month.”
  • Correct: “I am fairly compensated and recognized for my contributions at work.”

2. Using Future Tense Instead of Present Tense

The Mistake:

Writing affirmations in the future tense, such as “I will attract success” or “I will attract a new partner.”

Why It Doesn’t Work:

When you project your desires into the future – that is where you will unfortunately keep them, in the future – to have your desires manifest you will experience them in the now. And thus your affirmations need to be phrased in the now for them to become true.

The Fix:

Phrase your affirmations in the present tense to embody the desired reality.

  • ❌ Incorrect: “I will attract a new partner.”
  • ✔ Correct: “I am now attracting a new partner.”

3. Focusing on What You Don’t Want

The Mistake:

Affirming what you want to avoid, such as “I no longer struggle with money” or “I’m not in debt anymore.”

Why It Doesn’t Work:

You manifest your dominant thoughts in life. If you focus on debt or struggle, even with words like “no” or “not,” your mind clings to the negative aspect—causing it to show up and grow in your life.

The Fix:

Focus on positive outcomes instead of problems.

  • ❌ Incorrect:  “I’m no longer in debt.”
  • ✔ Correct:  “I now enjoy financial freedom and abundance.”

4. Ignoring Resistance

The Mistake:

Choosing affirmations that trigger doubt or resistance.

Why It Doesn’t Work:

When your mind perceives an affirmation as untrue, it creates inner conflict.

For example, if you are in significant financial debt, using an affirmation like “I am a billionaire” might create doubt or resistance, undermining its effectiveness.

For affirmations to work, they need to feel true. This conflict makes it harder to embody the affirmation and take supportive actions, ultimately making it difficult—if not impossible—for the affirmation to manifest.

The Fix:

Always use affirmations that feel believable in the here and now:

  • ❌ Incorrect: Using “I am wealthy” if it feels untrue (though if it resonates as true, it is a fantastic affirmation).
  • ✔ Correct:  Using an affirmation that feels true for you, if “I am wealthy” brings up resistance, here are a few to consider given our example:
  • “Every day, I am growing more and more financially prosperous.”
  • “I accept financial abundance.”
  • “Every day, new avenues of income open up for me.”

5. Choosing Affirmations That Don’t Resonate

The Mistake:

Using affirmations that don’t feel personal or meaningful to you or address your mindset constraints.

Why It Doesn’t Work:

If you find that when you are reciting affirmations there isn’t any feeling or connection, you will not get results. Affirmations are most effective when they resonate deeply with your goals, values and ways of thinking. If they feel generic or irrelevant, they won’t evoke the emotion, belief and action needed for transformation.

The Fix:

Borrow phrases if needed, but make sure they “click” for you, spark a sense of possibility, feel true, and ignite excitement.

6. Forgetting to Engage with Your Affirmations

The Mistake:

Writing your affirmations or picking out ones you love, then forgetting about them.

Why It Doesn’t Work:

To maximize the power of your affirmations, you need to engage with them throughout your day. The more senses you involve, the stronger the impact. Simply writing them down and forgetting about them doesn’t bring them to life or help manifest your goals.

The Fix:

Integrating affirmations into your daily routine and truly embodying the empowering words you've chosen is crucial for manifesting your goals. Consistency and belief are key—connect with your affirmations regularly, feel the transformation, and let them guide your mindset and actions.
